Local Missions

And the King will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." - Matthew 25:40

WUMC is passionate in reaching out to help others!  We offer a variety of mission opportunities that take place around our community, our state and around our nation.  For more information on any of the following mission opportunities, please contact Pastor Michael Whaley, Associate Pastor of Missions.

Come Join the Mission Team!

The mission team meets once a month to discuss current mission opportunities and provides the team with a chance to sign up for participation.  The meeting takes place on the third Tuesday every other month at 8:00 pm in Room 102 following the First Fruits service.  All are welcome to attend at any time!

Making Donations to a Mission

We strive to make it very easy for you to make donations for any mission opportunity.  In the Narthex (front hallway) of our church, you'll find red bins located under the stairway.  Each bin is labeled with a mission name.  Items are picked up from the bins on a weekly basis.  Feel free to drop off your donations to the appropriately marked bins at any time.

CARITAS

We are excited to once again welcome our CARITAS guests to stay with us May 10-17th!  This week we will help house individuals, families and children at our Hampton Park Campus.  If you'd like to volunteer during this life-changing mission by helping do laundry, providing a meal or by a variety of other means, please contact the Garner's at garner01@comcast.net.  Thank you for your support!  Click here for more information on the CARITAS program.

Quick Mission Opportunity

The mission team is currently accepting donations of napkins, plastic forks & spoons, cups and laundry detergent for Richmond Friends of the Homeless to be used at the Mt. Moriah Soup Kitchen. These donations help with the daily operation of the two locations of soup kitchens that serve the Richmond area through Richmond Friends of the Homeless.  Drop donations off in the Mt. Moriah red bin.

Thanksgiving Turkeys

Once again, last year WUMC partnered with CCHASM (Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Alliance for Social Ministry) to provide Thanksgiving Meals to less fortunate families in the Greater Chesterfield County Area.  Through your generosity WUMC helped provide Thanksgiving Meals to over 1600 families in our area. Thank you for your support!

Habitat for Humanity

Would you like to participate in building a house through Habitat for Humanity?  So far we have only received interest from four individuals, but we will need many more volunteers to make up a team.  If interested, please e-mail Pastor Michael.

Mt. Moriah Soup Kitchen "FEEDING THE HUNGRY"

Are you looking for a new volunteer opportunity in 2008? Why not join us at the Mt. Moriah Lunch Program?  Volunteers are needed monthly to cook an inexpensive casserole dish and servers are needed to serve meals. The soup kitchen is always in need of institutional size cans of green beans and mixed fruit. Our involvement in this mission is twice per month on the 2nd Thursday and the 4th Friday. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact "T" at clbutz@comcast.net  for the Thursday lunch program and Ronnie or Sue at rdvsue@comcast.net for the Friday lunch program. This ministry is open to individuals 12 and over. All those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  We would like to thank those who helped with our last visit by cooking, serving, or providing cans! Click here for directions.

Church Hill House

The WUMC mission team has recently joined together with the Boulevard United Methodist Church in downtown Richmond as part of the Urban Ministries initiative to provide a feeding program for residents of the Church Hill House in Richmond. Church Hill House is a government subsidized retirement community located in Church Hill. With your help and the help of members of the Boulevard Church, we will be able to provide a meal for our new friends in Church Hill the third Saturday of each month.  This ministry is open to individuals 12 and over. All those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We are currently in need of donations of chili and desserts, as well as volunteers to serve. If you can help, please contact Alex or Ann.

WUMC Food Pantry

The WUMC food pantry is in need of canned meats, complete boxed meals and vegetables. This food pantry is used to offer assistance to families in our area who need immediate help. If you would like to help restock the food pantry, please leave donations in the red bin marked "WUMC food pantry". Any donation is appreciated.
Items you can donate include, but are not limited to:

    • Cereals
    • Canned chicken or tuna
    • Canned soups
    • "Meal in a box” dishes that include the meat
    • Individually wrapped packs of peanut butter or cheese crackers (Nabs)
    • Non-perishable lunch box items

Fishes & Loaves Ministry

We would like to thank everyone who has supported our Fishes & Loaves ministry, which benefits the pediatric ward at CJW. These donations help families of ill children who are reluctant to leave their children to eat meals. Through your donations, these parents have snack foods available in the waiting area. Donations of non-perishable microwavable items, cookies, crackers, etc. are appreciated and can be placed in the bin marked "Fishes & Loaves." This is a worthwhile ministry appreciated by many.
